The surprise guest was a Lutheran Minister, a Major General, and a US Senator. He took part in the fighting at Charleston, Brandywine, Stony Point, and Yorktown, as well as the winter at Valley Forge.
He is famous for his actions as he gathered his recruits and said farewell to his Woodstock congregation when is said to have thrown off his clerical garb to reveal his military uniform, proclaiming “There is a time to pray and a time to fight, and that time has now come!”
